Donald J. Trump Has Been Tested And Found Wanting

Yesterday, at his disappointingly-attended inaugural campaign rally in Tulsa, OK, Trump promoted his (it-would-be-funny-in-a-Saturday-Night-Live-skit-but-it's-deadly-in-a-President) common-senseless plan to "slow the testing down" (national COVID-19 testing), because, apparently, in his Adderall-addled mind, doing so would reduce the number of COVID-19 cases.*

(*This is the same person who, initially, refused to let a cruise ship dock in Oakland, CA, and let passengers disembark because it had been reported that some of them had COVID-19. And, Trump objected to letting those American citizens set foot on American soil and, thereby, raise the number of American COVID-19 cases. Cases which Trump has viewed and continues to view through his malignantly-narcissistic lens as "his" cases - not America's or Americans' - and, therefore, he considers them to be demerits against him).

Almost immediately afterward, Trump campaign spokespeople, his administration, Congressional Republicans and other Trump loyalists were all hurriedly backpedaling and downplaying Trump's ignorant statements. They all repeated their worn-out and broken-record explanation that: "He was just being 'tongue-in-cheek'". Those Trump-apologists are shameless and dishonest.

To date, at least 120,000 Americans (and counting) have died from COVID-19. If we continue on our current path of viral-denial, then, the number of Americans killed by COVID-19 is expected to reach 200,000 by September. So, making such remarks - even if intended to be "tongue-in-cheek" -   isn't even the slightest bit funny. It's callous, insensitive and utterly out-of-touch with the clear, present, highly-contagious and very deadly threat that the Trump administration - through their slow response, inadequate actions, and continuing inaction (not empowering the Defense Production Act to force U.S. companies to manufacture still scarce and desperately-needed PPE for front-line workers. He did it for meat-production, but refuses to do it for Personal Protective Equipment production) allowed to infiltrate and decimate so many of our fellow Americans (particularly in under-served communities of color).

In our current, collective, connected reality, the number of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations have been on the rise in many U,S. states. Despite this worrisome fact, VP Mike Pence just penned an op-ed in which he declared that there's "no second wave" of COVID-19 in America.

Well, he's absolutely right (I know. I can't believe I'm saying that, either). But, it's true. There is no second wave in America, at present. But, the reason for that is because America hasn't made it through the first wave... not yet.

And, as this May 15, 2020 article (below) proves, Trump's rally, yesterday, wasn't the first time that Trump has put his science-challenged thought processes on display and declared that, "if there was no testing, there would be no cases".

Hospitals, ICUs, and funeral-homes across the country would collectively and vociferously-refute such demonstrably-false claims.

Trump Seems To Think There’d Be No Coronavirus If There Was No Testing...

The Donald J. Trump Death Cult And It's Aftermath...

(I wrote the following blog entry exactly one week ago, as I walked my dog along empty streets framed with boarded up storefronts, the rare passerby (most wearing a mask and social-distancing, nervously). I had finished it before I'd made it back home...

Every single person/entity that voted for the utterly incompetent and unqualified Donald Trump for President in 2016...

Every single person/entity who donated to Trump’s 2016 campaign...

Every single person/entity who supported Trump in any way/shape/form...

Every single member of the U.S. Representatives and every single U.S. Senator who ever turned a blind eye/acted as if they possessed deaf ears/refused to fulfill their Oath of Office ("Protect and Defend the U.S. Constitution from all enemies - foreign and domestic") and/or voted to install incompetent and/or unqualified people as agency heads or as federal judges and/or voted for that $2 trillion tax break for millionaires, billionaires, and big corporations and/or voted to give away billions of dollars in "small business loans" to wealthy corporations and/or refused to vote to impeach Trump and/or refused to remove the justifiably impeached Trump from office...

Each and every single one of YOU has contributed to and/or played a part in making this ongoing, completely-avoidable, national public health and economic disaster possible.

Each and every single one of YOU has enabled and encouraged the malignantly-narcissistic, sociopathic, fantasist that is Donald J. Trump to continue to occupy the most powerful position in the country and in the entire world... even though this full-grown man continues to whine and complain about and attack those who criticize his unconscionable inaction/callous indifference/endless self-praising... as he continues take actions that only benefit his wealthy donors, big corporations, himself and his family... as he plays golf and holds campaign rallies while this far-from-"invisible" enemy continues to spread out - unabated and unmitigated - across the United States... despite the fact that Donald Trump empowered the Defense Production Act to force COVID-19-riddled meat-packing facilities to keep producing meat products... while our heroic, and  essential front-line medical and other workers continue to fulfill their job duties despite experiencing a continuing lack of desperately needed and, yet, inexcusably rare PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), which Donald J. Trump could empower the DPA to manufacture in the U.S. - right now ... YOU have all had a hand in creating the circumstances that allowed these once-avoidable and, now, excruciatingly painful (in loss of human lives) and massively damaging (economically) events to take their shocking toll on all of US.

There are, now, well over 1.5 million cases of COVID-19 and counting in the United States of America.  There are, now, at least 98,000+ and counting COVID-19-related dead Americans in the United States of America.

A mourner at a funeral home in NY took this photo of room overflowing w/ bodies.

And, ICYMI ~ ALL of this very real, human loss and pain and all of the long-term economic suffering that has/is resulted/resulting because YOU have allowed Donald Trump to continue to corruptly-occupy the Office of the President of these United States of America... ALL of the unnecessary and utterly avoidable death and destruction wrought by Donald J. Trump's abysmal response to a viral threat that the entire world saw coming in January and February... the responsiblity for all of it falls on - not only him, but - ALL of YOU, too (regardless of whether or not you accept that responsibility - it's still YOURS).

Absolute Unconscionable Presidential Irresponsibility

President Harry S. Truman: "The Buck Stops Here."

"President" Donald J. Trump: "I Don't Take Responsibility At All"... for the criminally-negligent federal response to the global COVID-19 pandemic that continues to savage America and which has already killed over 73,000 (and counting) of our fellow Americans.

Wait a minute (Cue record back-scratch)!

Is he not "The President"?  Is he not the President who wields - according to him - Absolute Power?

Wait!  "If he’s not ultimately responsible, who is?"

"Who runs the country?"*

*Answer:  Donald J. Trump is ultimately responsible.  Regardless of his cherry-picked denials.  He's the "Chief Executive" of these United States.  He's running the country.

And, the terrifying thing is:  He's running our country just like one of his businesses.  Exactly like one of the various businesses he destroyed / ran right into the ground / ran into bankruptcy... and then, he just walked away.

Danger!  Danger Will Robinson!

This is an Emergency!

The Big Bad Wolf is in the Hen House and He's Slaughtering all of the Hens!

We Have No Reason to Believe 5G Is Safe...

Beware of 5G, Peeps.

5G (for the 1st time) employs millimeter waves as well as microwaves.

Do you remember when the cell phone industry was declaring cell phones were absolutely harmless (because they were making $$$ hand-over-fist)?

Now... All cell phone manufacturers advise customers to NOT keep their cell phones in their pockets/on their person due to the increased risk of cellular damage/cancer.

(A "no-brainer" to me as the technology is microwave-based. i.e. Close proximity to cell phone boosters causes my skin to feel like I'm under an intense heat lamp)

From Scientific American: "... Short-term exposure (to 5G) can have adverse physiological effects in the peripheral nervous system; immune system and cardiovascular system. The research suggests that long-term exposure may pose health risks to the skin (e.g., melanoma), the eyes (e.g., ocular melanoma) and the testes (e.g., sterility)."

So, contrary to widely-held, yet, untested belief...

COVID-19 Testing Failure Falls Primarily on Trump Administration

"The Trump administration came into office pledging to “deconstruct the administrative state.” This manifested itself in attempting to hollow out the capacity of government. It is this mentality that led to the dismissal of a pandemic response team. It is this mentality that leads to a reliance on people such as the president’s son-in-law with no government experience to manage government response during a crisis (think back to “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job”). It is this mentality that makes responding to a crisis so much harder."

COVID-19 testing failure falls primarily on Trump administration

Remember when - a few days before the the expected peak of the COVID-19 crisis - the Trump administration was going full-steam ahead with their plans to end federal support for COVID-19 testing, and transferring the responsibility for managing and funding the sites to states?  Thankfully, the backlash was strong enough to force them to reconsider their plans.

What Is The Trump Dumpster Fire?...

What is the "Trump Dumpster Fire"?:
"The Trump administration badly undermined the effort to contain the coronavirus outbreak by getting rid of most staff tasked with identifying global health problems in China while repeatedly attempting to slash funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), according to a new report by an environmental watchdog.
Over the past three years, the Trump administration has drastically reduced a team working in China to identify global health threats like Covid-19, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year. The initiative’s 11 CDC staffers have been cut to three people, while 39 workers classed as “local employees” have been reduced to 11 people."

In 2018, Trump Disbanded the NSC Team Focused Solely on Global Health Security...

Back in May of 2018, the Trump Administration pushed out the White House official "responsible for leading the U.S. response in the event of a deadly pandemic...", Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer from the National Security Council.  Ziemer was not alone.  The global health security team overseen by him was also disbanded.

The Trump Administration called it a "reorganization".  But, none of these extremely important positions were ever re-staffed.

Around that time, "... Luciana Borio, director of medical and biodefense preparedness at the NSC (National Security Council), spoke at a symposium at Emory University to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1918 influenza pandemic. That event killed an estimated 50 million to 100 million people worldwide:

“The threat of pandemic flu is the number one health security concern,” she told the audience.  “Are we ready to respond?  I fear the answer is no.”"

Not surprisingly, Director Borio was correct.

Think of the federal government as an octopus.  It has numerous tentacles (agencies/departments).  Each tentacle functions independently of the others, but all of them are working for the common good.

By removing Adm. Ziemer and disbanding his team, the Trump administration completely and abruptly amputated the tentacle that that was in charge of monitoring, identifying, responding to, and preventing the outbreak of global pandemics.

This was a National Security level team.

Disbanding it was myopic, irresponsible, and put national security and public health under immediate threat.

The global COVID-19 pandemic sweeping across the world, spreading across the USA, and touching virtually every American's life are the fatal fruits of the Trump Administration's labors.

Epidemiologists and other medical experts saw this situation coming.  They warned the Trump administration, repeatedly.  Their words fell on deaf ears, repeatedly.

And, just like Nero in Rome, Trump fiddled while America burned.

Top White House official in charge of pandemic response exits abruptly

I Don't Think They Heard Me: The Less-Than-Helpful Reply From the F.C.C.

Question:  Are YOU willing to trust your health and well-being (and that of all of your loved ones) to an over-whelmed, understaffed and (IMHO) far too WiFi Industry-cozy federal agency ("Trust us, we're with the government.") ?

(Please note:  I'd contacted the F.C.C. (please see previous blog post) out of concern regarding a real public health hazard:  I'd felt my shoulder being burned by a retail, wall-mounted, WiFi booster antenna at a local shopping mall - not to complain about any "provider".)

F.Y.I. ~ The F.C.C.'s own website claims that public, wireless, network antennas don't emit the type of extremely high R.F. (Radio Frequency aka "microwave") radiation that can damage human flesh.

In the wake of my recent experience, I beg to differ.

*The Wireless Industry's sole motivation is the raking in of Profit.

*My sole motivation has always been and continues to be Public Safety.)

Here's the REPLY that I received from the F.C.C.:

"Thank you for sharing your story. Your Ticket No. is 1324555.

Your story will not be served on a provider but will be shared internally to inform policy and potential enforcement. You will not receive any further communication from the FCC.

If you want to file an informal complaint that will be served on your provider, please go to www.consumercomplaints.fcc.gov and select a complaint category.

Your story provides the FCC with important information we can use to develop policies to protect consumers, remedy violations of the Communications Act, and encourage future compliance with the law.

Thank you for your help in furthering the FCC’s mission on behalf of consumers."

Hmm...

If I won't "... receive any further communication from the FCC. ", then how will I know if this information ever reached the appropriate persons/parties at the agency?

Can You Hear Me NOW?: An Open Letter To The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Re: Public Safety, RF Radiation & Cell Phone Antennas

An Open Letter To The Federal Communications Commission (FCC): (Subject: The Immediate Public Health Hazard Posed By Excessive and Unsafe Levels of RF Radiation Emitted By Retail, Wall-Mounted Cell Phone Booster Antennas.) "November 22, 2016
Hello FCC Staff:

I am writing to share with you my concerns for the public health following a recent experience of mine.

I was sitting with a friend at a table in the courtyard of an open-air shopping center.  There are small restaurants on either side of the courtyard.  The exterior facades are all brick.  At one point, I leaned back in my chair and felt a significant amount of heat on my left shoulder and upper arm.  Initially, I assumed that I'd inadvertently sat beneath a nearby restaurant's patio heat-lamp.  A few moments later, when my friend and I got up to leave, I turned to my left, expecting to see a commercial heat-lamp behind me.  But, much to my surprise, there was no heat -lamp.  There was only a small, white, commercial cell-phone booster antenna mounted on the wall, about 7-ft. off of the ground.  I raised my arm, so that my hand was directly in front of it, and I immediately felt heat on my skin.

It was my understanding, from all that I've read on the subject, that cell-phones and wireless network devices are required by law to emit such a low amount of radiation as to not cause heating of human tissue.  I'd read that only large antennae - on rooftops or on hilltops were likely to emit enough (non-ionising?) RF radiation so as to noticeably heat and damage tissue - and that 's why maintaining distance from them is important.

Is there a specific department or office at the FCC that I should report this to?

My concern is that this antenna may be only of many that might be exposing countless men, women and children to a harmful amount of RF radiation on a daily basis.

I look forward to your response and appreciate any pertinent information you are able to provide.

Thank you."

An Open Letter To The EPA Re: Cellphone Boosters, RF Radiation and Burning Skin, Oh My!

An Open Letter/Email To The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Re: Cellphone Boosters, RF Radiation and Burning Skin (Oh My!):

"Dear EPA:

I am concerned about a recent experience I had while sitting in a public courtyard at a local open-air shopping mall.  I was sitting at a table with a friend and suddenly realized that I felt a focused heat on my left shoulder and upper arm.  Initially, I assumed that I had, inadvertently, sat too close to a nearby restaurant's patio heat-lamp.  But, when I got up to leave, I turned to look for the lamp and there was no heat-lamp... in fact, there was only an exterior, wall-mounted, cellphone booster antenna nearby.  It was placed about 8-ft. above the ground.  But, I definitely felt it heating my skin and deeper.  Like I said, I had thought it was a heat-lamp before I turned around.

I am concerned because, according to your own website, "At very high levels, RF energy is dangerous.", but the non-ionizing radiation from wireless technology that is capable of heating the body's tissues rapidly is supposed to be "... found only near certain equipment, such as powerful long-distance transmitters." and you go on to say that, although cellphone and wireless networks emit RF radiation, it's "not at levels that cause significant heating."

My recent experience definitely refutes these statements and I am concerned, not only for my own, but also for the public's safety.  Especially if there's no regulation of or laws regarding the amount of RF radiation that is being emitted from these widely-used, human-adjacent devices.

Please let me know - including the EPA - to whom and at what agency should I report this?

Thank you!

San Francisco, California

(From: "About Non-Ionizing Radiation From Wireless Technology)
... At very high levels, RF energy is dangerous. It can heat the body's tissues rapidly. However, such high levels are found only near certain equipment, such as powerful long-distance transmitters. Cellphones and wireless networks produce RF, but not at levels that cause significant heating. In addition, RF energy decreases quickly over distance. At ground level, exposure to RF from sources like cellphone towers is usually very low.""

Prescription for Addiction: Tens of $Milllions in Advertising, Test Results Approved By Spin Doctors and 2 Lobbyists Per Congressperson.

"Spare any Change?"...

Utter those three, innocuous, little words - here in San Francisco, anyway - and you risk getting written up by the local beat cops for what is called "Aggressive Panhandling".

"Buds?"...
Of course, offering to sell people street drugs might get you three hots and a cot with a view of the cell facing yours.

But, if you happen to be aggressively selling pharmaceutical drugs...

Well, then there's quite a different outcome...

If you're an American pharmaceutical company, you need never fear being sent to prison for spending millions of dollars enticing citizens of all ages - via an endless barrage of flashy tv commercials and magazine ads - to take drugs that they not only do not need... but to pay exorbitant prices for and to take drugs that may not work... or, if they do have effects... some turn out to be much worse than the initial issue that they are taking the drug for.

Did you know that it's only in America and New Zealand that drug companies are allowed to do DTC advertising ("Direct-To-Consumer").

I used to get annoyed at the endless barrage of car commercials...
But, they were for cars... and I skateboard, the S.F. Bay Area has an extensive public transit system and tooting your horn about your cars getting a whopping 30mpg is not impressive nor toot-worthy... it's tragic and disappointing.

I haven't done a scientific survey...
But, I'm pretty sure that those glossy, smiling, happy, warm-fuzzy, drug-dealing, big Pharma ads are aiming to outnumber car ads 2-to-1.

Listening to the dialogue being uttered in them, I want to scream. I find them sneaky and misleading. What is actually said in the ads and what it sounds like they are saying are very different things. It also bothers me that they give out a grocery list of symptoms, so that you are now well-informed and can go report these symptoms to your doctor and possibly get a Rx written whether or not you really have them. Then, there's the laundry list of possible side-effects, which is as long as the rest of the commercial, but is squeezed into and speed-read in less than four seconds.

There's one that is utterly mind-boggling to me and, apparently, not many others since it's still on the air. It's for a product called "Humira", I believe. Something marketed as being used to affect symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Anyway, one of the many possible and horrible side-effects associated with this medication is lymphoma...

That's LYMPHOMA, people... Cancer of the Lymph Glands!... A "possible Side-Effect"?
I don't know about you... but I'd rather deal with sore joints and take Advil or get Acupuncture... than deal with CANCER.

I often have said... and still stand behind my statement that, "The FDA is NOT Your Friend." And, sadly, Congress is, thus far, too well-lobbied to take action to make measureable changes in how Big Pharma does its drug-testing and dealing.

Thankfully, there are Real People who are looking out for your health and mine... and they aren't dressed in white lab coats and wearing stethoscopes...
Former NY Times journalist Melody Petersen has written a thoughtful, well-researched and very timely book on the subject: Our Daily Meds: How the Pharmaceutical Companies Transformed Themselves into Slick Marketing Machines and Hooked the Nation on Prescription Drugs (Sarah Chrichton Books).

I recommend it. Some of what she reveals might make you angry, but, at least you'll be better informed... and that alone is empowering.

Peace.

Our Daily Meds: Navigating the Polypharmacy
Derek Beres
Posted April 17, 2008 | 12:21 AM (EST)

In the 1970s, Professor J. Scott Armstrong put forth a conundrum to close to 2,000 business school students and executive trainees. Intrigued by the corporatizing of the pharmaceutical industry, he created a scenario (based on an actual 1969 incident) in which a company has a new drug with a projected $20 million profit. The catch: For each million the company nets, there is one death from side effects. The first twenty million meant twenty deaths, and so on thereafter.

Students and trainees were given five options, ranging from immediately pulling the drug from shelves--regulators stated cheaper, more effective pills without such grave side effects exist--to downplaying risks and promoting the drug heavily, creating a media-driven whitewash in which consumers could not discern problems, and therefore readily open their pockets.

The results? Zero took the first option; 79% chose the latter. As former NY Times journalist Melody Petersen writes in her new book, Our Daily Meds: How the Pharmaceutical Companies Transformed Themselves into Slick Marketing Machines and Hooked the Nation on Prescription Drugs (Sarah Chrichton Books), "For these students and trainees, who were playing the roles of the executives they would soon become, profits took precedence over patients."

As one can imagine by the book's subtitle, the above is not an isolated case study. In fact, it shows how the drive to maximize profits at any expense is built into the educational system by which students become executives. Petersen spends the majority of her book citing such examples, moving from hard facts and statistical data to personal interviews with people who have fallen victim to the marketing of pharmaceutical companies or, worse, have lost loved ones during the same process.

The varied and often disguised layers of pharmaceutical marketing and maneuvering begin at the outset, when Petersen reminds us that Americans spent $250 billion in 2005 on prescription drugs -- twice as much as we paid for higher education or new cars. This total is also greater than the population of "Japan, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina combined." Sadly, this is due in part because our federal government is the only office in the developed world that does not control prescription drug prices. It leaves that to the companies themselves, a process that belittles the integrity of the medical profession--which is supposed to be about healing--by sticking to the idea that "the few the options, the higher the price; the greater the desperation, the greater the suffering, the higher the price."

Even more depressing are corporate payouts to doctors, the men and women who are supposed to represent the pinnacle of the healthcare profession. Petersen cites numerous examples of doctors receiving payola for prescribing certain drugs, like Dr. B.J. Wilder, who received a $401,350 check from Warner-Lambert to send himself and 125 medical residents to a luxury resort in Florida, or Dr. Ilo Leppik, who received a stipend of $303,600 to publish his book on epilepsy. Both were awarded those sums for the support they gave to Neurontin -- a drug that Pfizer (which came to own Warner-Lambert) had to pay $430 million in court fees for illegally marketing. An estimated 90% of prescriptions of the drug were for uses that the drug was not approved to treat, including attention deficit disorder and sexual dysfunction. Originally developed to combat epilepsy (and even then, not very well), it became a hit for the company for a variety of other "illnesses" which it did nothing for.

Again, this is not an isolated case by any means. Buying off doctors to promote prescriptions -- a practice which takes numerous forms, including "scientific" reports written by marketing companies and signed off by supposedly respected professionals, as well as partnering with them to help create diseases that don't necessarily exist--affects the majority of the industry. As Petersen often reminds us, paying off DJs to play music was regulated thanks to governmental intervention. When dealing with substances that can, and are, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans (the healthcare industry is the third biggest killer in the country, behind heart failure and cancer), however, the government and FDA remain mute.

I found myself getting angry at each page I turned. Yet it was an empowering rage, one based in knowledge. The book is like lifting the veil of ignorance that hangs over a country inundated with bright, colorful advertisements with perky stuffed animals and light violet skies promising us peace, equanimity and fun. The reality is anything but. In 2003, an executive from GlaxoSmithKline said that more than 90% of drugs "only work in 30 or 50 percent of the people," and their own tests found that certain drugs were only 25% effective. To maximize profits, though, they've encouraged the creation of a polypharmacy, where a person is on multiple prescriptions.

Often people are given one drug to battle one problem, and then another to counter the side effects of the first pill, and so on. This is bad enough when pushed on seniors, who rely on their doctors to help them enjoy their later years in as good of health as possible (and who, by the way, Petersen points out, are rarely if ever tested clinically when companies are trying out new drugs; these tests are almost always on young and healthy men and women). When our children became the focus of such marketing--between 2000-2004, prescriptions for sleeping pills in children age 10-19 increased 85% -- it is inexcusable.

Tragically, a drug often works no better than a sugar pill, yet the pharmaceutical industry is driving -- let's make that dominating -- our economy. Petersen projects that by 2015 one in every five dollars we earn will be feed back into healthcare. This might be justifiable if it meant that our health was getting better. To the contrary, we're actually declining in health as a nation, as our life expectancy rates have fallen far from the top of the list of "developed" worlds. How developed a nation can be when a small percentage of business executives is knowingly and purposefully promoting drugs that are killing fellow humans remains a question that Petersen does not, and cannot, answer. Thankfully, with this elucidating book, we can take that question into our own hands, and decide for ourselves how hooked on their tether we remain.

Hello Luvlies!

In Case You Haven't Heard...
The Latest Scare... No, Not a Terror Threat...
A Serious Public Health Threat is...
That old standby... MRSA... But, Now... It's a New and Pissed Off MRSA.
If You Thought Using All of Those Antibacterial Products Was a GOOD IDEA...
Well... You Were Wrong!
From NPR *(A Trustworthy Source of Information.)
Q&A: Drug-Resistant Staph Infections

by Joe Neel and Richard Knox

NPR.org
January 14, 2008

MSRA infections have garnered much news coverage recently because of the release of the first nationwide study of the bacterium published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The study, conducted in 2005, showed a surprisingly high number of MRSA infections, which are a type of staph infection. This type of infection was found to be three times more prevalent than previously believed.

Recent studies are also showing that the germ is continuing to evolve into strains that are resistant to even more antibiotics.

Here are some answers about MRSA:

What is MRSA?

MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
Staph is a common bacterium, present on the skin or in the noses of about 20 percent to 30 percent of the population. It's usually nothing to worry about. MRSA is a strain of staph that has become resistant to treatment with antibiotics, including penicillin, amoxicillin, oxacillin, methicillin and others. That makes MRSA harder to treat than regular staph infections.

What do staph and MRSA look like?

Both often start out as mild infections on the skin, showing up as pimples or boils. Infections with garden-variety staph are easily treated in most cases. Both staph and MRSA can cause more serious skin infections or they can lead to pneumonia or infections of the bloodstream, urinary tract or the lining of the brain. Surgical wounds are often prime targets for these germs.

How do you catch MRSA?

MRSA is nearly always connected to health care facilities. Most people who have MRSA have been hospitalized within the past year, or they've gotten treatment in an outpatient facility or nursing home. People can acquire MRSA in health care facilities but not show any signs of infection for weeks or months.

But in recent years, MRSA has spread beyond these facilities into places where people are in close contact, such as athletic facilities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 15 percent of MRSA cases in the United States occur outside health care settings.

Skin-to-skin contact with a person who carries MRSA is believed to be the most common way people get MRSA in the community. In this situation, people who are otherwise healthy may get a skin infection with MRSA. It's also possible to get MRSA from surfaces that are contaminated with the germ, but this is less likely than person-to-person contact.

Who is at risk for MRSA

The CDC says it has investigated clusters of MRSA skin infections among athletes, military recruits, children, men who have sex with men, and prisoners. Risk factors include close skin-to-skin contact, openings in the skin such as cuts or abrasions, crowded living conditions and poor hygiene.

What about schools?

Recommendations for preventing infections in schools focus on good hygiene. Cleaning regimens vary from district to district. The CDC says that in most cases, it is not necessary to close schools because a student has an MRSA infection. Covering infections will greatly reduce the risks of surfaces becoming contaminated. The CDC says the only surfaces that need to be cleaned are those that have been recently touched by someone with MRSA. "In general," the CDC says, "it is not necessary to close schools to 'disinfect' them."

What about health clubs?

The CDC says that the environment has not played a significant role in MRSA outbreaks, but it advises that you always practice good hygiene. At health clubs, this would include showering after working out and using a barrier such as clothing or a towel between your skin and shared equipment. The CDC also recommends wiping surfaces of equipment before and after use.

Why the sudden outbreak of MRSA?

There hasn't been a sudden increase. Drug-resistant staph germs have been spreading across the country for years now, causing deaths from time to time. In the JAMA study published last fall, the CDC estimated that 94,000 Americans get potentially life-threatening MRSA infections every year. That's three times the previous estimates and came as a surprise to many people.

How is MRSA treated if it is resistant to antibiotics?

So far, MRSA is not resistant to all antibiotics. Vancomycin is one treatment. If your doctor prescribes an antibiotic, take the whole prescription — stopping too soon can cause bacteria to become resistant to that antibiotic.

What is the new resistant staph being reported in gay communities?

It's a variant of the MRSA that's spreading nationally. It's resistant to more antibiotics than regular MRSA — not just penicillin-type drugs like methicillin but also clindamycin, erythromycin and mupirocin. The new strain is called multiply drug-resistant MRSA (MDR-MRSA).

The strain has caused serious infections in hundreds of people so far, mostly in the gay communities of San Francisco, Boston, Los Angeles and New York. Doctors say these infections are more fast-moving, so any delay in recognizing them and treating them with the right antibiotic can cause life-threatening infections.

Researchers think many of the infections so far have been transmitted during sexual activity. But MDR-MRSA is spread through skin-to-skin contact and sometimes by contaminated surfaces or shared towels. So anyone can get infected. The precautions are the same — frequent and thorough washing, and immediate attention to any boils or painful rashes.
